Alif’s Journey from Isolation to Belonging
Alif, a 17-year-old refugee, shares his story of resilience and transformation as he navigates life in Jadimura Refugee Camp (Camp 27). After fleeing from Myanmar with his mother following his father’s death, Alif found himself in a new world filled with hardships and challenges.
Alif’s journey to the refugee camp was marked by hardships, including a traumatic event that left him with impaired vision. In the camp, he faced mockery and isolation due to his physical condition, causing him to feel nervous and detached from the other children. As the burden of responsibility weighed heavily on his shoulders, Alif’s worries about his family’s well-being and his future only grew.

Despite his challenges, Alif sought solace in work, engaging in tasks that contributed to the community’s well-being. However, his life took a positive turn when he encountered Case Worker Shahara Apa and volunteer Zakir. Recognizing the detrimental effects of child labor and Alif’s need for support, they reached out to him, offering friendship and guidance
Shahara Apa and Zakir went advocated for Alif’s well-being. They spoke to his mother, emphasizing the importance of ending child labor and securing a better future for Alif. They accompanied him to the hospital, ensuring he received necessary eye treatment, and helped his mother find a volunteer job at AGRAJATTRA, enabling her to contribute to the community.
With the support of Shahara Apa and Zakir, Alif overcame his fears and insecurities. They introduced him to other children, fostering opportunities for socialization and friendship. Alif found comfort in their presence and the newfound connections he formed within the camp. He now attends the Multi-Purpose Childcare Centre (MPCC) whenever possible.
Alif’s journey illustrates the transformative power of compassion, friendship, and support. Through the dedication of individuals like Shahara Apa and Zakir, Alif transcended his past of fear and isolation. Today, he is a more confident individual, embracing hope and a sense of belonging in the midst of a challenging environment.

His transformation is a testament to the resilience and the potential for positive change, even in the face of adversity.
