Social Media Post – SWSC WASH
Kachpia Nurbanu Community Clinic in Teknaf sub-district, Cox’s Bazar, serves 16,000 people, far beyond its original capacity of 6,000 people. This overwhelming demand placed immense pressure on its water supply, sanitation, & hygiene facilities, and waste management systems, leading to serious health and environmental concerns.
Under the “WASH in HCFs – Advocacy for System Strengthening” project, funded by the Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium (SWSC), a needs assessment identified critical gaps in the waste disposal system. Due to the absence of proper waste bins, medical and general waste was discarded in the clinic’s yard and later burned in an open space. This caused bad odors, mosquito infestations, and health hazards.
To address these issues, Tdh provided the clinic with three color-coded waste bins:
Black – General waste
Yellow – Infectious waste
Red – Sharps and hazardous materials
Healthcare personnel were trained on proper waste disposal and maintenance, and bins were placed at key waste-generating points for easy access. This intervention has significantly improved waste management, eliminating open dumping, reducing infections, and creating a safer healthcare environment for both staff and patients.
The clinic’s in-charge and healthcare workers expressed their gratitude to SWSC and Tdh, emphasizing that this simple yet effective intervention has transformed the clinic into a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable healthcare facility.
Small changes create lasting impact!
