Project summary
In Bangladesh, as the country suffers heavily from frequent droughts, tropical cyclones, and floods due to climate change, many are forced to emigrate internally. It is estimated that by 2050, climate change will cause one in every seven people in Bangladesh to suffer displacement. The project focuses on inclusion and empowerment of 10,006 young People who are displaced or at risk of climate-induced displacement through sports for protection (S4P) initiatives in Kurigram district and Dhaka.
Project objective
This project is working to include and empower adolescents and youth who are displaced or at risk of climate-induced displacement in Kurigram district and Dhaka slums. It is doing this by: (1) Improving the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of displaced or at-risk adolescents and youth by giving them access to safe sports. (2) Engaging displaced or at-risk adolescents and youth to help them learn coping strategies for migration and displacement risks and to promote local solutions through youth-led initiatives. (3) Training sports coaches and other stakeholders on gender-friendly safe sports and encouraging their support for sports-based protection initiatives in Bangladesh.
Key activities
- Providing youth with regular access to safe sports activities to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
- Developing youth leadership skills so they can lead development activities and promote local solutions.
- Encouraging sports actors at local, district, and national levels to support a safe sports environment for youth in Dhaka and Kurigram.
